You still have to use and clean it as you are used to. The fact that you would love to enhance your carbon steel knife with a patina doesn’t mean it is okay to neglect it. How can you form a patina on your knife in a controlled manner? The line between both might be thin, but patina is more controlled than rust. Rust, however, continues to spread and will affect the knife in the end. After all, patina is a thin layer that forms on the blade and is ‘finished’ after some time. When you learn that patina forms on knives that are not very corrosion resistant you might start to think that it is simply rust. What is the difference between patina and rust? Well-known catalysts of patina are: salt, acids and moisture. You could, for instance, expose two exactly similar knives to different circumstances and you will notice different discolourations on both. How does patina emerge?īecause of external influences patina can emerge in different ways. For instance, a (kato://product/Buck 110) can have a flawless blade while the brass bolsters show the actual age and character of the knife. ![]() Those metals can turn black or even green. However, patina can also manifest itself on other materials. Some steels cannot withstand corrosion at all and start to form a patina the moment you hold your finger against it, other types require long-term explosion to the elements to start showing discolouration after a couple of weeks or months. That is due to the different degrees of corrosion resistance. Sometimes there are major differences between the types of carbon steel or tool steel that are used. Our Eden Kanso Aogami-knives are known for the stunning patina they form. Think of survival knives made from, for instance, 1095 carbon steel. Now I plan to use the finishing techniques mentioned above (sand paper and steel wool) followed by bronze patina, which is available at my local Michaels craft store. In general patina forms on carbon steel knives. ![]() The weight of the final print is truly impressive. However, the stringing is easily removed by just rubbing my hand on the print. I had the same slight stringing that is shown above for Ultimaker Original print. I used support and it was able to be removed easily. My print was tall and narrow and took about 12 hours to print. I also tightened my extruder spring that holds the filament to make a tighter grip than required while printing PLA. Using Simplif圓D, I slowed down my print speed to 50% as I heard the filament slipping as the print started. Printed on blue painters tape with light coating of hairspray. 2mm layer height, 50mm/s (3000 mm/min) speed, 215C extruder temp, 60C heated bed, 4.5mm retraction distance, 45mm/s retraction speed. I printed successfully using Printrbot Plus Metal. Profiles ultimaker_original_02_bronzefill ![]() If you prefer to use a different slicer software you should be able to find similar settings and create your own profiles. The next few tables show the most relevant slicer settings for Cura en Makerware. We’ve also printed it succesfully on kapton tape with the same temperature settings. It can be printed straight on glass or with a bit of gluestick applied to it. We’ve noticed that bronzeFill has prety much no warping what so ever, it’s much better then regular PLA.įor heated build platforms we use a temperature of 55-60 C which will keep the print sticking to the platform. For cold build platforms we generaly use blue painters tape which you can buy at any decent hardware store. This filament will print great on both heated and non heated build platforms. If you have great tips or slicer settings please share! Build Platform We’re sure most will be able to dial in settings in no time, but we still thought a write-up on print settings is interesting to share. This material is based on our unique PLA/PHA recipe which means that it will print very similar to our other PLA/PHA materials. It’s time for a write up and share print settings and methods of post processing this awesome material. The trial period for bronzeFill is up and the first customers have already received and printed with bronzeFill.
