So, the brightness of a galaxy is more directly related to how many stars it has formed in the last few million years than the mass of the galaxy as a whole." ![]() They rapidly use up their fuel in nuclear reactions. "Because more massive stars burn at a higher speed, they are shorter lived. "Most of the light in a galaxy comes from the most massive stars," Faucher-Giguère said. If the bursty star formation hypothesis is correct, the galaxies that the JWST detected are brighter because we are viewing their stars form in these sudden bursts, not because they contain as many stars as those in the present day. Later, as the universe aged and galaxies got bigger, their gravity became too strong for gas to be ejected by supernovas, forcing stars to form at a more sedate pace. This heartbeat of gas, pulsing in then out, enabled stars to form in rapid, bright bursts after millions of years of dormancy. In the early universe, stars were born by sucking gas toward them before pushing it out again upon their deaths in stellar explosions known as supernovas. 32 jaw-dropping James Webb Space Telescope images Mather shares the 2006 Nobel Prize for Physics with George F. The James Webb Telescope detected the coldest ice in the known universe - and it contains the building blocks of life James Webb telescope detects the earliest strand in the 'cosmic web' ever seen Known as "bursty star formation," the process is unlike the steady rate of star birth in today's universe and could explain why the early universe is so bright. To investigate what could have given these galaxies their strange sparkle, the researchers created a model of galaxy formation and ran it through a supercomputer - simulating the swirling, clotting gas of the early universe as it turned into stars, which in turn formed into galaxies.īy carefully accounting for the mass, energy, momentum and chemical composition of the young universe, the researchers found that stars at this early time could have formed in sudden, rapid bursts after years of quiescence. If these galaxies were like ours, to glow so bright they would need to have swollen to enormous sizes in a fraction of the usual time. It was a discovery that put their most basic understanding of how the universe evolved into severe doubt. This made the JWST's discovery of thousands of unusually bright early galaxies, some even resembling our own, a bewildering surprise for astronomers. Scientists don't know exactly when the first clumps of stars began to merge into the beginnings of the galaxies we see today, but cosmologists previously estimated that the process began slowly taking shape within the first few hundred million years after the Big Bang.Ĭurrently accepted theories suggest that these early protogalaxies reached adolescence 1 to 2 billion years into the universe's life - forming into dwarf galaxies that began devouring each other to grow into ones like our own.

If you’re a Mac or iOS user and want to crop a video, you might be wondering if iMovie can do that. The technique is most useful when converting horizontal video showing scenery, since you don’t have to worry about cropping to fit a particular subject.Photographer: Juliana Malta | Source: UnsplashPhotographer: Juliana Malta | Source: Unsplash You can still preserve its quality despite having to crop it. That way, when you use the crop to fill, it won’t suffer too much distortion and noise. The technique can be applied to videos with a subject that is captured from a bit far away. When using the technique I described above to make iMovie video vertical, always consider its applicability to the horizontal video that you are editing. Preview the video and rotate it accordingly to correct its orientation. Once the file has been saved on your Mac, open the Finder app and locate your video.
![]() Dual-chamber ICDs can provide quantitative and continuous daily PA and AF burden data using a remote home monitoring system, enabling accurate detection of PA changes and new-onset AF ( 15). In the present study, early changes in PA from baseline to 1 year after implantation were evaluated in patients with ICD/CRT-D implantation. To date, few studies have assessed changes in PA after ICD/CRT-D implantation. It was indicated that longitudinal decrease in PA was associated with a higher incidence of new-onset AF, resulting in worsened long-term outcomes. found PA decreased and mortality increased significantly after a newly persistent AF episode in patients with ICD ( 19). Baseline PA can also predict new-onset AF among the general population or patients with HF ( 15– 18). Low levels of baseline PA were associated with higher incidences of hospitalizations for HF, cardiac death, and all-cause mortality after ICD/CRT-D implantation ( 11, 14). Moreover, accelerometer-derived PA can be detected within the first 30–60 days to reflect the baseline PA status ( 14). PA can be measured via questionnaires to reflect an individual's functional status over the preceding years or months ( 13). Physical activity (PA) can predict the outcomes of different diseases ( 9– 12). Thus, it is essential to predict the incidence of new-onset AF and initiate anticoagulation and rate control management to improve the long-term clinical outcomes after ICD/CRT-D implantation. In patients receiving ICD or cardiac resynchronization therapy defibrillator (CRT-D) implantation, new-onset AF was also associated with a greater number of ICD shocks for ventricular arrhythmia, inappropriate shocks, hospitalizations for heart failure (HF), and increased mortality ( 5– 8). AF is associated with higher risks of ischemic stroke, cardiovascular events, hospitalizations, and all-cause mortality ( 3, 4). It was reported the prevenance of AF in patients with implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs) was as high as 25% ( 2). Decreased PA was an independent risk factor for cardiac death (HR = 3.358, 95% CI: 1.880–5.996, P < 0.001) and all-cause mortality (HR = 2.803, 95% CI:1.732–4.535, P < 0.001).Ĭonclusion: PA decrease after ICD/CRT-D implantation is associated with a higher incidence of new-onset AF, resulting in worsened outcomes in cardiac death and all-cause mortality.Ītrial fibrillation (AF) is a common cardiac arrhythmia with an increasing prevalence ( 1). Per 1% decrease in PA was associated with 12.4, 18.3, and 14.3% higher risks of new-onset AF, cardiac death and all-cause mortality, regardless of different baseline characteristics. New-onset AF was defined as the first atrial high-rate episode ≥1% of the daily AF burden detected after implantation. Changes in PA were considered from baseline status to 1 year after implantation. The association of PA changes with new-onset atrial fibrillation (AF), cardiac death and all-cause mortality was unclear in patients at high risk of sudden cardiac death. ![]()
